AHGZ - Rostock. Hanseatische Weiterbildungs- und Beschäftigungsgemeinschaft Rostock has become one of the biggest training provider of the region.
It's been a long time: In May 1990 Bremen and Rostock, the employers' and employees' associations founded the Gastronomisches Ausbildungs- und Trainingszentrum of the Hanseatische Weiterbildungsgemeinschaft e.V. Rostock (HWR). This was the foundation stone for the first educational institution of this kind in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Modest start
"At that time we were drawing the buffet with chalk on the floor", Hans-Erich Meier, who has significantly influenced the development of the educational institution from the very beginning, is looking back. In 1992 the school was re-named into Hotel School Rostock, and Meier was appointed the Director of the school. Two years after passing the HWR into private hands, Meier becomes the Manager of the Hotel School Rostock at the Hanseatische Weiterbildungs- und Beschäftigungsgemeinschaft gGmbH Rostock (HWBR).
One pillar is vocational training for specialists in the hotel and restaurant industry, for chefs or sous-chefs, which can be organized as training at intercompany level, re-training or in cooperation with an enterprise. Further training courses for hotel and restaurant specialists and chefs, as well as advanced education courses for specialists who want to become masters of their trade are especially demanded. Full time courses last for three and a half months and require previous work experience of four years. Besides the CCI Certificate the participants can take an examination at the University of Cooperative Education (BA) Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and thus acquire a double diploma.
For about two years now, the course that was developed with the Promotional Service of the German Armed Forces has been offered nation-wide - with success. "About one third of the participants come from Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The others come from all over Germany. We have even trained chefs from Switzerland and the Seychelles", reports Meier and refers to the opportunity to get qualified as a dietary cook within 15 months, for example. Since this year also organic chefs are qualified at the HWBR - a novelty in Germany. Under certain conditions cooks can get financial support via education bonus vouchers when taking part in these courses. Besides that, the Walter and Margarete Müller-Foundation takes over all costs after successfully passing the examinations. The housekeeping school is another segment of the HWBR, and courses can be completed with examinations at the Chamber of Agriculture. This offering is also interesting for hotel keepers, as qualification is organized in courses.
"And vice versa hotel keepers also like employing our successful participants, as permanent staff or temporarily during peak times", knows Hans-Erich Meier.
Courses for sommeliers
The German Bar Academy, managed by Antje Gühlke can also be found under the roof of the HWBR. They offer courses that have been certified - another novelty in Germany - and they can be co-financed via education cheques in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania or education vouchers nationwide.
Really new in the portfolio of the HWBR Sommelier and Wine School Rostock is the five-day course to become a "Sommelier professionel du thé". Courses start from October 2010 and can be completed with an examination and certificate of the University of Cooperative Education (BA) Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
